San Antonio Outreach
Most travel sites don't talk about the homeless but we have several San Antonio Outreach programs here that you should know about.
The San Antonio Food Bank collects donations of money and non-perishable food to feed the San Antonians in need. The demand for food has gone up due to the economic downturn of 2011 and the Food Bank is always happy to receive monetary, food, and time donations. My children have all worked at the Food Bank, sorting and distributing food as people come in for help. BRCC aka Bandera Road City Church gives a great deal of food and cash to the Food Bank each year. You can
make a donation to the Food Bank here.

Haven For Hope
is a new homeless shelter located in downtown San Antonio. It is a private nonprofit shelter that opened in 2010 and houses and retrains the homeless for jobs and furthers their education. They have a drug rehab facility onsite and currently are helping 900, all free of charge. My son plays there once a month in his Christian band, One Accord, for a worship service. He enjoys going there, helping the less fortunate. The Strong Foundation is a private nonprofit shelter for the homeless as well. My husband and son have worked on their buildings, repairing and rebuilding so that homeless families can be kept together until they can find work and earn enough money to be out on their own again. My husband and I go there to teach Financial Peace University to the residents so they can learn how to handle their money once they get jobs. We have taught several groups Dave Ramsey's principles. You can
donate to this worthy ministry here.
Once a month, my son and his band play at a church downtown while the organization Loaves and Fishes provides food to be served to the homeless on the last Sunday afternoon of every month. My husband, my daughter, and I have gone there to serve food to the homeless. We have enjoyed talking with the people and making them feel special while serving them. The church is near the Alamo, First Presbyterian Church at 404 N. Alamo. One of the better known San Antonio Outreach ministries is SAMMinistries is an interfaith ministry that gives shelter to the homeless, along with basic care. It was founded after a former pastor of First Presbyterian Church found a homeless man outside the church, who had frozen to death. My husband contributes to them. If you would like to donate to their ministry,
you can do that here.
